40 Things for 40

It’s a major milestone!  I’m turning 40.  In honor of that, I wanted to write something special, but found it is hard to put into words ALL the things... so instead, I’m going to share 4 Top 10 lists with you.  Enjoy!

Top 10 Things on my Bucket List This Year (Year 40!)

  1. Celebrate my birthday with brunch and lots of pretty flowers (ahem, Daniel Kang)!

  2. Summit a mountain (or a few)

  3. Run a 10km race

  4. Complete a fitness challenge (9 weeks completed!) ✓

  5. Read through the Bible

  6. Travel back “home” (Vancouver Island)

  7. Go on a trip with my hubby (We just celebrated 15 years of marriage)

  8. Invest in a vacation property (one can dream, right?)

  9. Further training for counselling (Gottman) ✓

  10. Take my kids to a live music concert

Top 10 Random Things About ME

  1. I am an Introvert (are you surprised, lol?)

  2. I love the color green.  I love being in nature, and especially the dark green in forests, but all greens are my favorite.

  3. I have never broken a bone.  I’m adventurous, but not a huge risk-taker.

  4. I used to love public speaking/performing.  Even though I’m an Introvert, put me in front of a large group of people and I can talk... as long as it’s not Improv (grade 10 drama class, shudder!)

  5. I walk almost every single day.  This goes way back to childhood when I walked to and from school (at least 2km each way) for 17 years.  My body craves movement!

  6. Of all the jobs I have worked, my favorite was an incredible opportunity I had to work for a tech start-up that was taken over by DISNEY!  Ask me about it sometime.  Coolest job EVER!

  7. There is just something I have always loved about little boys... I think I find them so fascinating, probably because they are SO different than me.  Having two of my own now, is the greatest gift ever!

  8. I was raised as a pastor’s daughter, and now am married to a pastor (even though I said I never would marry a pastor lol... I went to Bible college, so what did I really expect???)

  9. I still talk to my childhood best friend whom I met when I was 6.  I am a loyalist at heart.  Once you’re my friend, you’re always my friend!

  10. I love to challenge myself.  I am not competitive against others, but I love challenges for my mind and body and compete only against myself.

Top 10 Learnings in my 40 Years

  1. A quick tidy-up ALWAYS makes you feel better.  If you’re procrastinating and don’t want to do it, set a time for 10 minutes and force yourself to start.  It’s incredible how much you can accomplish in that time.

  2. How you do your make-up when you’re 14, is probably how you’ll still be doing your makeup when you’re 40...Learn good habits when you’re young, and they will stick with you for a lifetime!

  3. Get outside every single day.  If you’re anxious, go outside.  When you’re sad, go outside.  When you’re happy, go outside.  When you’re bored, go outside.  When your kids are driving you crazy, go outside!  You get the point?  Outside makes everything better!

  4. Do all that you can to stay in touch with family, whether that is the family you’re born into, or the family you create. The day will come when you look around, and see that nothing really matters more than the people you hold dear.

  5. Everyone just wants someone to know them.

  6. Find things that make you happy, and just DO them.  Prioritize them.  Make space in your life.  Don’t compare what you do with your time to others... fill up your time with things you love.

  7. On the subject of comparison... just DON’T DO IT!  There are a million plus one reasons why you won’t be able to do what others do, but it just boils down to one thing.  You are not them.  You are you.  Be YOU! (And if you don’t know who you are, spend some time figuring it out).

  8. Eat the cake.  (Did I say I like cake?).  But don’t eat it all the time.  Everything in moderation, people.  You don’t have to live so restrictively that you’re never happy, but don’t binge either.  Choose when and how you treat yourself, and then indulge and enjoy!

  9. Learn how to do things that make you feel empowered, like changing tires, or painting furniture, or sewing your clothes.  Find role models who you can look up to, and who cheer you on and empower you

  10. Finally, above all else, ground yourself in the LOVE that God has for you.  This will make your identity.  Explore your faith. Ask questions. Always return to the one who created you.

Top 10 Things I LOVE

  1. Laying in the sunshine and soaking it up!

  2. Good, good coffee.  I’m a coffee and cream kind of gal, or I will take a latte.

  3. Flowers.  My dream would be to always have fresh flowers in my home.

  4. Romantic movies.

  5. The ocean.  Nothing grounds me and regulates me like sitting at the beach, watching the waves roll in.

  6. Mini eggs.  They are my ultimate weakness.

  7. Walking with a friend.

  8. The beauty after a fresh snowfall.

  9. Uninterrupted time with a good book (and a snack)

  10. Feeling confident in the skin I am in!  I love that feeling of a good outfit, fresh styled-hair, and clean makeup that looks like ME.

So there you have it, folks.  I honestly can't believe I'm turning 40.  Here's to a new decade, and all that it brings!
