The Calgary Zoo

We went to the Zoo!  Twice, actually, since we moved here.

Before we left Comox, our church lovingly gave us a goodbye gift of a season's pass for our entire family.  What a cool idea!  Our boys are 4, turning 5, and this is just the perfect age to explore and love the zoo.

Personally I have not had a lot of chances to visit a zoo, and I was definitely blown away by how big and exciting the zoo is.  I love it just as much as the kids.  The Calgary Zoo is so family-focused, and here are some of the highlights from our time.  Photo credit for all these pictures goes to my hubby, Daniel Kang.

The zoo is divided into 5 different areas to explore: The Canadian Wilds, Destination Africa, Dorothy Harvie Gardens, Eurasia and Prehistoric Park.  Even after visiting twice, there are still places we haven't explored.  Our kids walked around for 3-4 hours both times, and by then we had reached our limit for the day.  It's been nice to have the membership because we don't have to worry about missing something - we know we can check it out next time.  For the littler ones, there are wagons you can borrow.

What is awesome for kids is that the walking is broken up with different rest stops, and eating areas, including playgrounds and kid-zones where they can learn, while playing.  We still haven't made it through to the Prehistoric Park, but I hear there is an awesome slide out of a T-Rex mouth and Dino dig, which I know my kids would love.

We have been able to catch a few of the shows too, and they are an awesome chance to see the animals in action. So far, as a family, our favorite animals have been:

Penguins - These ones are all of our families favorites!  They are just so entertaining to watch.  I could stay and watch the all day.

Lemurs.  For some reason, RJ was obsessed about seeing them, the strange kid he is (that is one of my favorite things about him haha)

Tigers - The tiger show was so cool to watch.  They are just such powerful creatures.

Gorillas - One is still a baby and so cute to watch play around. The kids thought they were just hilarious!

Hippos - Of course, little boys love the farting, stinking, fattest animal around

Wolves - The boys' favorite thing is to try to wake the wolves up by standing at the fence and howling at them.  Usually they just sleep, but last time they DID wake up and came right up to the kids, which blew their little minds!

So there's our first glimpse at the zoo.  It was a perfect distraction and break from the monotony of packing on those nice summer days.  We can't wait to go back and explore more!
