Kindergarten's Eve
I have no idea how to begin this post, except for those 7 words a million other mothers are uttering right now: I can't believe this day has come!
Tonight is the eve of kindergarten. Tomorrow my babies will pack up their bags, and I will drop them off into the arms of their waiting teacher at SCHOOL. Real school. This milestone is, by far, the biggest one we have crossed yet, and maybe the biggest of all, at least until they get married or something. Kindergarten! I have both dreamed about, and dreaded this day pretty much since the day my twins were born. I remember hearing another twin mom describe that with twins it happens all at once. Unlike families with kids different ages starting school at different times, as a twin mom, you send your first, and your last, off to school all at the same time. This is the only time I'll do this for my kids. There's no gradual entry for parents.
I honestly never thought I would be ready for this day. I have LOVED the precious, special time, that I have been able to be at home with my kids for these past 5 years. No, that doesn't mean that I have not had times of weariness, or stress, or wished my kids could be whisked away to just let me go to the bathroom in peace for once. My husband can attest that I have not been the Pinterest-model stay-at-home-mom in any way, shape, or form. BUT I have truly treasured all the precious moments I have had with my boys. I feel SO fortunate to have been able to pour into their lives and make so many special memories with them from day one. And I know, I know, these moments aren't going to suddenly stop as soon as they go to school (for 3 hours a day, at that). Yet I feel that something does change when they join the world outside of our home on a more formal, official basis. Suddenly I lose some control, or protection, or influence. Suddenly, their world becomes much bigger. That is both exciting, and how it should be, and yet also a little bit sad.
And yet...
After the summer we have had, I am soooooo ready to send off my beloved children to another's influence, and support, and love, and care. I think after a solid month of being together as a family ALL day, EVERY day, we are ALL ready for a break from one another (haha). The kids are ready for some mental stimulation. They need to make friends. They need a break from me. I need a break from them. We don't have grandparents around to drop them off for a bit of time here or there anymore. I need a bit of a break to decompress and process all the change that has taken place for myself.
In some ways, I feel like it is the grace of God that things happened as they have. I am more ready than ever, to let my kids go. But there will be tears. Oh, there will be tears. And that's okay. It is kindergarten, after all.
